SCHOOL GROUNDS

For 30 years, Bergen Bank had been responsible for a collection of old fishing equipment and household objects. When the bank moved into its new premises, it had no more room for this collection. It was then suggested that this collection would be donated to the local school, where it could be an essential part of the lessons.

During 1991/1992 an old rorbu and an old house were moved to the school grounds. The school received funding to properly restore the houses. The school was also given grants from the county for this project.

Johan Amundsen has been one of the driving forces behind the project. He feels that the projects main goal is providing  pupils with a safer environment. The rather large, empty schoolyard had proved to be a bit scary and intimidating, especially for the younger pupils. The idea is to make the school grounds into a living, breathing environment, not just a museum or scenery.

Today the school grounds consist of several old buildings, for example an old schoolhouse, a blacksmith and different workshops.
